Few astronomical phenomena are as impressive as an eclipse. Eclipses can be very potent symbols of world events and astrologers have always placed great meaning upon them. And in the next few weeks, we will witness a few eclipses.

October 25th: Solar Eclipse

A partial solar eclipse begins Tuesday, October 25th at 4:58 am and ends at 9:02 am EST. The maximum eclipse will be at 7:00 am. Rahu and Ketu are the lunar nodes, which are the points where the moon's path in the sky crosses the sun's path, or ecliptic. Solar eclipses occur when the passage of the Moon through a node coincides with the new moon. In this case, the Sun and Moon are in Libra close to the South Node and the North Node is in Aries.

November 8th: Lunar Eclipse

A total lunar eclipse begins Tuesday, November 8th at 3:02 am and ends at 6:59 am, EST. The maximum eclipse will be at 5:59 am. The lunar eclipse occurs with the opposition of the Sun and Moon. In this case, the Sun is in Libra close to the North Node and the Moon (full Moon) in Aries is close to the South Node.

In Vedic astrology, eclipses are regarded as powerful (often tumultuous or even earth-shattering) portents of both personal and world events. The light of the luminaries—the Sun and Moon—is obscured, potentially casting shadows across our awareness. The truth, according to Vedic Astrology, is that the day of an eclipse or the few days surrounding it are not a good time to begin or end things, make important decisions or sign contracts. In fact, the same goes for the 2-week period that separates the solar and lunar eclipses. This is because auspicious beginnings are blessed with light, ideally the light of a healthy, full moon and the daytime sun. We can’t stress it enough, with Rahu and Ketu gobbling up this light, we need to use our discernment wisely.

As the Moon relates to our mind and emotion, during an eclipse, don’t let any unsettling emotions disturb your peace. Ketu, the Moon’s South node, relating to past karma, forces us to take stock of any emotional issues that took place during the last six months. Rahu, the Moon’s North node, relating to the present, can create undue attachments and obsessions. So, this period can be used as a time of reflection to resolve and reset our emotions and move towards the future with a more spiritual understanding of where we have been and where we would like to go.

During these eclipses, it is best to remain peaceful and objective, and not let any emotions overshadow our good judgment. We would be well-served by taking some quiet time to tune in and pay heed to the “small still voice within”—to follow the wisdom of our heart. Make sure, due to the obstruction of the light of the two powerful luminaries that we use our discernment wisely; otherwise, we can affect the happiness of those close to us.

Consequently, it was always considered that during an eclipse, it is a great time to stay in, meditate and be reflective. It is especially effective for introspection and connecting with the Spirit within you.

And, as eclipses temporarily block the light of the luminaries, it is an ideal time to connect with our inner light through self-reflection, contemplation, mantra and meditation. We recommend reciting the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, the mantra of Shiva, during an eclipse. This mantra helps release our consciousness from limiting patterns of negative thought and behavior; it opens us to deeper insight, gives us a greater freedom of self-expression and instills within us the strength needed to meet a specific challenge, attain a desired goal or overcome blockages interfering with our well-being.

Each one of us longs for deep and meaningful relationships. In a lifetime, we have numerous opportunities to experience a union of souls: between business associates, friends, a parent and child, a husband and wife, a teacher and student, a guru and disciple.

Often we find ourselves repeating negative patterns of behavior. We may be drawn to people that bring us unhappiness; we may be dissatisfied with our jobs; or we may persist in unproductive ways of thinking that create pessimism and negativity. We want things to change, but don’t know what to do. Sometimes, we tell ourselves that we are just unlucky. We may even blame other people or life itself for our misfortune. In our pain, we may ask, “Why is this happening to me?”

We are told by the sages of old that happiness lies within ourselves and our sense of fortune or misfortune all starts with our perception

A great area of the hand you can check for perception and to see how objective you are in your daily life, particularly in your dealings with people, is the Mount of Moon. This zone signifies the degree to which we receive an accurate or distorted impression of what is happening around us. It is thus an indicator of our ability to perceive ourselves, and the world around us, in an objective manner. It is extremely important, as our perceptions are the foundation for our actions. Also, the Moon is the mount we check for signs of optimism, depression, gratitude, sadness, trust or paranoia.

A calm, balanced Mount of Moon is pink in color and ideally has a strong line of destiny originating on it. Preferably, there are not too many horizontal bars crossing the mount. Ideally, it is balanced with its neighboring Mount of Venus, thereby indicating steadiness, depth of character and an ability to make a commitment.

Red Luna

If you often feel anxious, apprehensive and insecure or if you are excitable and impulsive in your judging events, check the Mount of Moon in both your hands. If your Moon is red compared to the rest of your hand, has horizontal lines or if you see a whirlpool pattern in the fine ridges of your mount, it shows that you are vulnerable and can easily be affected by your immediate circumstances. Handprints can even give a clearer picture of that area in your hand.

By remaining inwardly calm, centered, and objective, we can deal better with changing events in our lives and our emotional reactions to them. We often hear it said that the only certainty in life is change. But although we may see ourselves as having little or no control over the changing events of our lives, we can control our perception of these events and consequently our reaction to change. Once we refuse to be at the mercy of our sensory impressions and our emotional responses to them, we can attract and maintain a happy, healthy and long-term relationship.

As Winston Churchill said, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” A great way to develop a good Moon is to remain positive. We’ve found one of the easiest and most effective ways to transform inner turmoil into creativity and joy is ensuring our Mount of Moon is strong and balanced. Indeed, the condition our Luna is in can make our life a heaven or a hell. So, we better make sure we are using our Moon energy properly—our success and happiness depend on it!

Dannion Brinkley had to die to become fully alive.

Without a doubt, Dannion remains one of the most fascinating clients I’ve ever had. I will never forget our first meeting, when this big bear of man appeared in my office and loomed over me. I didn’t know whether to get up to shake his hand or run for the door. I decided to shake his hand, but he wasn’t interested in so formal a greeting. Instead, he wrapped his brawny arms around me, lifted me off my feet and gave be a big hug that radiated with genuine warmth and affection. “It’s great to meet you darlin’,“ he boomed in a lilting, South Carolina drawl. We sat down and I began to examine his palms, but before I could say a word, he took my hands in his and said, “Before we get started, let me tell you my story.”

I soon discovered that Dannion had not always been so warm and affectionate. “As a kid, I was mean and vicious,” he told me.  “I was a big guy and loved to throw my weight around. I was king of the bullies. What I loved doing most was beating up people as badly as possible, and I beat up hundreds. I’d rather punch someone in the face than say hello to them . . . I was filled with hatred and rage, I had a massive ego and a violent streak a mile wide, and I was proud of it.”

After high school Dannion found a perfect outlet for his aggressive nature—he joined the Marines, where, as he put it, he was trained to be a cold and calculating killing machine. He excelled at his training and was recruited into an elite squad assigned to assassinate enemy politicians and military leaders. “That line of work suited me perfectly,” he said. “It was my dream job, I thought I’d found what I was born to do.”

But killing wasn’t what Dannion was born to do, which he learned after receiving a dramatic wakeup call from the Cosmos.

Dannion’s life changed forever in 1975, when, at age 25, he was chatting with a friend on the telephone during a thunder storm. Lightening hit the outside phone line, travelled to the receiver Dannion had pressed against his ear, zapped him in the head and then shot through his body with such force and energy it melted the metal nails of his army boots. The jolt threw him across the room. The next thing he knew he was floating below the ceiling, looking down at his wife as she frantically pounded on his lifeless chest trying to get him to breathe. A paramedic appeared beside her and pronounced Dannion dead. He was rushed to the hospital, but the doctors could not revive him.

In his bestselling New York Times book, Saved by the Light, (and the movie based on the book) Dannion describes what happened next. After leaving his physical body he entered into a spiritual realm, travelling upward through the “tunnel of light” that has been described by so many who have undergone near-death experiences (NDEs).

“The further I travelled toward the light, the more I felt I was being embraced by a being of all-encompassing love. It was more than the love we get from a wife or parent—it was like a granddaddy’s love . . . no demands or expectations, just pure, unequivocal and unconditional love.”

Dannion described incredible encounters with beings of light, and the psychic visions he received. But for me, the most poignant part of his story was about his life flashing before his eyes. “It was horrifying and excruciating. I encountered every person I had ever hurt—I felt the agony and humiliation I inflicted on them. And I experienced the suffering and confusion of the people I killed, and the pain and grief their relatives were forced to live with for years. The being of light that engulfed me was all love; there was no recrimination or judgement of my actions—but seeing what I had done, I was forced to judge myself. I realized what a selfish, self-centered, cruel and destructive man I had been, how I had squandered my opportunity to do good and bring joy into the world . . . how I had wasted my life. It was not a pretty picture—the shame and guilt was mentally and physically unbearable, like being set on fire and drinking battery acid simultaneously. “

When the review of his life ended, the loving being that was embracing Dannion wordlessly conveyed this message to him: Who you are is the difference that God makes, and that difference is love. As the being moved away, Dannion’s pain faded; he felt the burden of his guilt being removed. And he knew he had been given a second chance. Moments later he awoke in his cold, dead body, which was laying on a gurney beneath a hospital sheet, about to be transported to the morgue. A hospital orderly noticed the sheet move and quickly wheeled Dannion into the emergency room where he was fully resuscitated. He had been clinically dead for 28 minutes. Although he was totally paralyzed for days, and spent months recuperating, he eventually made a complete recovery—both physically and spiritually.

To say I was stunned by Dannion’s incredible story would be a massive understatement. But what struck me most (and will remain with me always) was what he said next. “I learned during that 28 minutes that, while there is physical death, there is no such thing as spiritual death. The spiritual aspect of us lives on as love . . . love is divine and lasting. All of us—each and every human being—are connected to each other in loving spirit. When we hurt others, we are only hurting ourselves. When we love others, that love spreads across the planet and enriches every life.”

With that awareness, Dannion chose to dedicate his “second life” to bringing love and happiness into the world by providing comfort and solace to the suffering. His wonderful organization, Compassion in Action (CIA), recruits, trains and supports hospice volunteers all across America. He has personally spent thousands of hours at the bedside of hundreds of dying strangers, many of whom were fellow war veterans. Holding their hands, Dannion helps them pass peacefully from this life to the next. In his second book, At Peace in the Light, he recounts the beauty of witnessing the divine reflection of love in the appreciative eyes of those who he cares for. When he is not working in a hospice, he helps others overcome life challenges, making good use of the psychic abilities he returned to his body with.

“We get this precious gift of life, and we must make the most of it,” he told me. Being alive gives you the chance to be everything that God is (and that God wants us to be)—kind, loving, protective, wise, and to create life. These are the skills of God—we must practice them while we still walk this earth.”

When I finally got around to looking at Dannion’s hands and astrological chart, it was a real joy to see the amazing life journey this incredible man, born under the sign of Cancer, has been following.

The Moon and Our Perception

Now, some of you may be wondering how a Cancer, a gentle-natured sign ruled by nurturing Moon (or Luna), could have become a vicious bully and deadly assassin in the first place. Well, let me explain: In our hand, the Mount of Moon pertains to the qualities of perception—our creativity, imagination and sensory awareness. All the information we receive about the world around us is filtered through the lens of Luna. And because our perception influences every area of our hand (and our life), Luna is the cornerstone of our personal and spiritual evolution. Moon directly impacts the balance of our three main energies of body, mind and heart—reflected respectively in the life line (how we behave), head line (how we think) and heart line (how we love).

So, when our Moon is balanced, we are happy, optimistic and the world is a beautiful place and we tend to be kind, empathic and compassionate people.

But our perception is a very difficult aspect of ourselves to control. This makes the Mount of Luna (along with the Mount Mars) the most difficult feature of our hand to balance. And when our Luna is out of balance so is our perception—we can perceive a kind word or friendly gesture as an insult or a threat. A severely unbalanced Luna can easily push us to the brink of, well, lunacy. And an off-kilter Moon can create a negative domino effect across the entire hand. For example, misperceiving a friendly conversation can make us irrationally paranoid, which will in turn ignite our Mars negative energy (remember Mars is the Warrior God), automatically putting us on the defensive, or worse, on the attack. Physiological, this can be seen in an unwarranted activation of our body’s fight-flight response, which will cause us to abruptly walk away from that perfectly pleasant conversation, or to begin spewing angry insults and sarcasm, or even to throw a punch.

In Dannion’s case, we can see that the Mount of Moon in his non-dominant right hand is very shrunken—it is extremely unbalanced. (Our dominant hand represents our conscious awareness; our non-dominant hand represents our unconscious.) This means that while growing up, Dannion’s subconscious perception of the world around him was completely distorted. He misperceived everything and everybody as being a threat, so fight-or-flight response was continually set to “fight” mode. Lashing out and inflicting harm made him feel safe, and that made him feel good. Even though his Moon is balanced in his dominant left hand, and his head line travels toward Luna in a gentle “philosopher curve”, he was unable to access the sensitive, nurturing and philosophical aspects of his nature due to his distorted subconscious perceptions

Vedic palmistry teaches us that we can change our lines (and the mounts of our hand), by changing our thoughts and attitudes. It took a Cosmic wakeup call in the form of a bolt of lightning for Dannion to realize he was completely misperceiving the world. However, once he did, he was able to examine his thinking and his actions, and gain the awareness, desire and courage to change his ways. He could then make the most of the balanced Moon energy in his dominant hand, awakening his dormant compassion. And that allowed him to use his Mars Warrior energy to protect and care for others, rather than to attack and harm them. As a result, Dannion became a better, more peaceful and loving human being, one who is now making the world a better, more peaceful and loving place.

We don’t have to be struck by lightning to access the vast positive potential of Mount of Moon, we just have to be aware of what our hands are telling us about ourselves and use that information to become the best we can be. Dannion did it, and so can you.

There is a great deal of truth in the old adage: Seeing is believing. Unfortunately, there is a great deal of untruth in it as well. When our Luna is not balanced, the information we are receiving through our sense organs can be skewed, misleading and even harmful.

Perhaps a good illustration of the sensory information we receive through an imbalanced Luna is a stroll through an amusement park House of Mirrors. In one mirror, we perceive ourselves as squat and fat, in another we are tall and toothpick thin, in a third we look like a hot-air balloon. The images are grotesque, but because we are aware of being in an amusement park, we know the information our eyes are receiving is faulty and we can laugh at what we are seeing. But when our Luna is off, we don’t need to be in an amusement park to receive distorted images of ourselves.

How often have we looked at own reflection and seen something that really wasn’t there, or projected an image onto ourselves that was untrue? We may have the loveliest face on the planet, but our mind obsesses on the tiny pimple on our chin until that pimple is all we see, and all we believe the world sees when we are looked at.

But what is the Moon?

The Mount of Luna is perhaps the most important of the hand’s ten mounts—some say it is the most important feature of the entire palm. That is because Luna governs our five senses of perception—smell, taste, sight, touch and hearing—which means that Luna pretty much governs the way we see, feel, experience and interpret everything we encounter in the world. In short, Luna is responsible for our thoughts; it affects every single aspect of our lives—from our moods and emotions to our relationships, our self-image and our mental health. And given the overwhelming amount of recent mind-body research illustrating the enormous impact our thoughts and emotions have on our bodies, Luna also plays a major role in our physical health and well-being.

Our mind can be bombarded by so much sensory data that we become preoccupied with the physical world. Instead of feeling the joy of a beautiful summer day, we choose instead to focus on our bad hair day . . . or the unsightly pimple on our chin.

Even with our eyes closed during prayer or meditation, we are still assaulted by thoughts and images—even when we try to block them out. If we do not train our mind to connect to our higher levels of consciousness, we will be forever at the mercy of our sensory perception. This condition can create an ever-escalating series of emotional highs and lows, which will disturb our happiness, complicate our lives and undermine our spiritual progress. Instead of concentrating on achieving our goals or pursuing our dreams, we waste time thinking of ways to get even with the rude motorist who cut us off; instead of being present with our child at a hockey game, we are wondering if our spouse is texting his old flame, instead of focusing on finishing our work assignments we fret away the hours wondering if our office mates are gossiping about us, and instead of meditating to calm our nerves we dwell upon the perceived snub by a friend.

These errant emotional thoughts are powerful disruptions that separate us from ourselves, from our purpose in life, and from those who rely on us. When we mentally wander off in this fashion, it can be said that we’ve “gone fishing”. This old English idiom refers to someone who has become completely unaware of their surroundings and has checked out from reality. Our best friend might be describing the birth of their first child to us, but they might as well save their breath—we may look like we are listening, but we are not hearing a word they say. We might show up for work every day, do our chores at home, even go out for nice dinners or to shows, but later we will have a hard time describing what we have done because we were AWOL from our own lives.

Even if, overall, we are a “glass half full” type of person, if our Luna is imbalanced—when we become too caught up in our thoughts or when our perception is false or faulty—that glass can suddenly appear to be half empty. Luna is responsible for feelings of sensitivity, receptivity and empathy. But when our perception goes haywire, we can easily withdraw into ourselves and witness the best parts of our Luna begin to falter and fail. We can come to view ourselves as being undeserving, unattractive, untalented and unworthy. And if we are overly focused on the external, we run the risk of disconnecting from our inner self and becoming subjective or even irrational, ruining perfectly good jobs, relationships or our future by failing to see correctly.

Sometimes, if we are habituated to emotional drama and in need of great levels of stimulation, we can develop an addiction to substances, some natural like adrenaline, others that are manufactured like drugs and alcohol, that flood into our bloodstream when our emotions are in a state of turmoil and distress. To fuel our addiction, we may attract abusive relationships, deliberately injure ourselves or recklessly put ourselves in situations that are illegal or dangerous. All this drama and chaos can prevent us from connecting with our inner peace and joy.

At the Birla Center we’ve found one of the easiest and most effective ways to transform inner turmoil into creativity and joy is ensuring our Mount of Moon is strong and balanced. In Vedic palmistry the Mount of Moon, or Luna, corresponds to our mind and emotions—it rules our power of perception and shapes the way we view ourselves and the world around us. Indeed, the condition our Luna is in can make our life a heaven or a hell. So, we better make sure we are using our Moon energy properly—our success and happiness depend on it!

This life-changing program teaches you everything you need to know about creating peace of mind, focusing your creative energies positively, using your imagination to create health and happiness, and to express your feelings freely from the heart.

Our fingernails are nature’s way of protecting the sensitive nerve endings of the fingertips. Vedic palmistry refers to the fingernails as the shield, or armor, of the human brain and nervous system—they insulate and protect us from the jarring hurl-burly of the physical world, ensuring we can remain calm in our day-to-day encounters.

Biting our nails is akin to a soldier stripping off his protective armor in the midst of battle—we are exposing ourselves to the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. It is also a sign that we are mentally troubled, preoccupied or uneasy in our own skin—any of which is detrimental to our peace of mind and overall well-being.

It is important for us to recognize nail biting as an unhealthy habit (we can ingest bacteria and damage the nail plate or surrounding tissue) as well as a symptom of a deeper physiological issue or nervous disorder. Persistent nail biting can be related to obsessive-compulsive disorder. Once we have identified the disorder, Vedic palmistry has a vast array of tools we can use to correct it—from reaching for a glass of water when we feel the urge to chow down on our fingertips to changing our thoughts and behavior patterns.

Silencing the voices

Nail biting is a sign that our mind is not at peace. When our mind is restless, troubled or unfocused, we are unable to control or even decipher our thoughts, let alone be inspired by them. The tangled thoughts of a distraught, worried or afflicted mind can guide us in harmful directions and instead of finding happiness, we encounter disappointment, sadness and even depression.

Cutting-edge advancements in neuroscience have proven that the average person has between 60- 80,000 thoughts each day and that the majority of those thoughts are negative and self-defeating. Indeed, many people often hear a nagging inner voice constantly reminding them they are not good enough, smart enough or deserving enough to be loved, happy and successful. Over time, that unhealthy messaging actually alters the physical makeup of the brain, trapping us in an endless loop of negative thinking that takes us nowhere and leaves us miserable.

A Quantifiable, Measurable Science

Much like modern neuroscience, the ancient science of Vedic palmistry teaches us that our thoughts make deep impressions (or grooves) in our brain, impressions that can come to dominate our mind. But where Vedic palmistry and neuroscience differ is that palmistry shows us the origin, nature and quality of our thoughts. If our thoughts are angry, bitter, jealous or confused, our hand will tell us why and what we need to do to correct the situation.

If you are a compulsive nail biter or want to get rid of another ingrained habit like obsessive worrying, we invite you to check our 90-Day Program: Head Line Challenge: Thinking Your Way to Happiness. Call me an accidental astrologer. Although I have been practicing Vedic astrology professionally for more than three decades, I didn’t set out 30 years ago to study the stars, or the importance of our ascendant sign, or for that matter, how the placement of the planets—in our chart and in the Cosmos—impact every aspect of our lives. My passion for astrology was not stirred by staring upward toward the heavenly constellations, but rather by looking downward into the palm of my hand . . . I fell in love with astrology by falling in love with palmistry.

Few people realize that Vedic astrology and Vedic palmistry are twin sciences. In ancient India, palmistry and astrology were considered, so to speak, to go hand in glove. Sadly, palmistry has become a bit of a forgotten sister that lacks the prestige bestowed upon astrology. I attribute this to the way palmistry has (too) often been viewed in the West, which is more entertainment than science.

But true Vedic palmistry offers us amazing insights into ourselves and our planets. Indeed, in Sanskrit, Vedic palmistry is referred to as Hast Jyotish, Hast meaning “hand” and Jyotish meaning “the energy of planetary light”.  So, when we study Vedic palmistry, we are actually studying the energy of the planets reflected in our palm. And all the planets in the Vedic zodiac are represented in their own individual area of the hand, a fact I became intimately aware of during my first consultation with palmist extraordinaire, Ghanshyam Singh Birla, back in 1984. It was an encounter I will never forget because it changed the course of my life.

At the time, I was an up-and-coming television producer/writer working in Montreal, just back from a long sojourn in Paris. It was kind of a glamorous life for an aspiring young career woman, but truth be told, I was utterly miserable. Nothing in my life gave me fulfillment—I found no joy in my work, my romances, my social life or in myself. I possessed tons of talent and energy but had no purpose into which I could positively direct my passion. I was frantically spinning my wheels like a madwoman but going nowhere; my life lacked meaning, I was at a loss as to what to do with myself and I was convinced I would never find real happiness. That all changed when I met Ghanshyam, who introduced me to the fascinating (and in my case, life-altering) world of astro-palmistry.

Within minutes of sitting down with Ghanshyam, he had analyzed my chart and my hand. Combining the tools of both astrology and palmistry, he quickly identified the positive and negative planetary influences at work in my life. For example, he told me I was a Cancer ascendant (ruled by Moon), which blessed me with vast reservoirs of mental and physical energy. However, because the “Mount of Moon” in my hand was over-accentuated and stirred up by the presence of a papillary pattern, my energy was frenetic, which had me bouncing all over the place emotionally. That in itself was a revelation as it accounted for the chronic mood swings that I’d suffered from since early adulthood. But Ghanshyam went further, informing that my excessive Moon energy was interfering with my powerful planetary Sun energy (my natural ability to shine in my career and in the world), which was prominently displayed in my palm’s Mount of Sun and Sun finger.

On the positive side, Ghanshyam pointed out that, having Jupiter in Scorpio in my 5th house aspecting an exalted Cancer, I possessed an innate ability to help others improve their lives and find purpose and meaning, which had always been an elusive dream of mine. He added that, in order to make that dream a reality, I would have to develop a “Ring of Solomon” on the Jupiter Mount of my hand, which he described as a “smiling” semi-circle just below my index finger that was considered a “wisdom sign”.

I was so captivated by how astutely Ghanshyam identified my issues and desires through astro-palmistry that I took everything he said to me to heart, which brings me to what I most love about Vedic palmistry. You see, in Vedic palmistry the lines and signs of our hand reflect who we are and the state of our overall well-being in body, mind and soul. Our palm is also a true reflection of how the power of our planets is being manifested in our lives.

While our planets remain fixed, how we are dealing with them is seen by the changing lines and signs on the related planetary zone in the palm. Exalted planets in our chart, might not be activated as seen by an inactive mount, negative planetary positions might show that we have overcome them by positive wisdom markings appearing on the respective mount. Our astrological chart, therefore, helps us zero in on what needs to be highlighted or repaired. Handprints taken at regular intervals show the changes we are making—a phenomena that allows us to literally outwit our stars by consciously avoiding negative Cosmic influences while embracing and emphasizing the positive ones.

I must admit, I was a little skeptical when Ghanshyam first told me I could change the lines and mounts of my hand by making a few simple changes in my thoughts, attitudes and lifestyle. But I soon discovered we cannot only change our lives by changing our lines, but we can actually see and monitor those changes as they are taking place with the use of “before and after” handprints. Over the decades I have witnessed major positive change occur in the lives of hundreds of my clients—just as I witnessed them take place in my own life.

After my first consultation with Ghanshyam I made a few adjustments to my lifestyle (learning to meditate and doing volunteer work, for example) that allowed me to calm down, focus my energy and become a more conscientious, purpose-driven individual. As a result, vast improvements appeared in the planetary zones of my hand—my Mount of Moon became balanced, my Sun line deepened and a Ring of Solomon appeared on my Mount of Jupiter. I was so amazed by how astro-palmistry positively transformed my life that I dedicated myself to the study of both Vedic palmistry and astrology, eventually developing my own thriving practice. Helping others through astro-palmistry has not only filled my life with meaning, it has given me a deep-rooted sense of personal happiness and joy that deepens with each passing year.

My hope in writing this little story is that some of you may be inspired to put a bit of time aside during the New Year to become acquainted with Vedic palmistry, the long-lost sister of Vedic astrology. Who knows, you may become an accidental palmist, too? At the very least you will gain a new and powerful method of interpreting your planets. And, if you are like me, find happiness and joy along the way.

A full Moon lunar eclipse begins this Sunday, May 15th, 2022, at 9:32 pm and ends Monday, May 16 at 2:50 am. The maximum eclipse will be at 12:11 am. Rahu and Ketu are the lunar nodes, which are the points where the moon's path in the sky crosses the sun's path, or ecliptic. The lunar eclipse occurs with the opposition of the Sun and Moon close to the Nodes. In this case, the Sun is in Taurus close to the North Node and the Moon in Scorpio is close to the South Node.

In Vedic astrology eclipses are regarded as powerful (often tumultuous or even earth-shattering) portents of both personal and world events. The illuminating light of the Moon is obscured, potentially casting shadows across our awareness.

As the Moon relates to our mind and emotion, at this time, don’t let any unsettled emotions disturb your peace.

During this eclipse, it is best to remain peaceful and objective, and not let any emotions overshadow our good judgment. We would be well-served by taking some quiet time to tune in and pay heed to the “small still voice within”—to follow the wisdom of our heart. Make sure, due to the obstruction of the light of the two powerful luminaries – the Sun and Moon – that we use our discernment wisely; otherwise, we can affect the happiness of those close to us.

The truth, according to Vedic Astrology, is that eclipses are not a good time to begin or end things. This is because auspicious beginnings are blessed with light, ideally the light of a healthy, full Moon and the daytime Sun. We can’t stress it enough, with Rahu and Ketu gobbling up this light, we need to use our discernment wisely.

Consequently, it was always considered that during an eclipse, it is a great time to stay in, meditate, and be reflective. It is especially effective for introspection and connecting with the Spirit within you.

And, as eclipses temporarily block the light of the luminaries, it is an ideal time to connect with our inner light through self-reflection, contemplation, mantra and meditation. With the Moon in Scorpio, we recommend reciting the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, the mantra of Shiva, during this eclipse. This mantra helps release our consciousness from limiting patterns of negative thought and behavior; it opens us to deeper insight, gives us a greater freedom of self-expression and instills within us the strength needed to meet a specific challenge, attain a desired goal or overcome blockages interfering with our well-being.

Is your past limiting your future?
Are you trapped in repeated, destructive patterns of behavior?
Vedic Palmistry can set you free—check out Elizabeth’s story.

Ever since she was in high school, Elizabeth didn’t feel good about herself unless she was in a romantic relationship. Raised in a stable, well-to-do family, she left home as a teenager to live with her boyfriend. The relationship was unhealthy and turbulent, but she stayed because she lacked confidence to live on her own.

After several years, she fled that relationship and jumped into marriage with a co-worker, hoping it would bring her the fulfillment she craved. But that relationship was also turbulent, and after the birth of her children, it soured as well. Her next relationship was a romance with another co-worker, but again . . . it ended painfully and abruptly.

Elizabeth was stuck in a destructive pattern she didn’t know how to break. Despite the fact that she had raised four children by herself and, by that time, had started up and was running her own successful business, her self-esteem plummeted when she was without a man in her life. She had been brought up to believe that her purpose and identity hinged on the romantic relationship in her life, not on her own attributes or accomplishments.

Elizabeth tried to avoid her pain by throwing herself into her work and the demands of being a single mom, but she was haunted by unhappiness and the memories of her failed relationships.

When she came to see me, she was desperate for change, believing palmistry could magically predict that her life would be filled with love, happiness and personal fulfillment.

“Elizabeth, Vedic palmistry isn’t magic—it’s an ancient science that has been helping people learn about themselves and improve their lives for more than 5,000 years,” I told her. “But, if you give it a little time, the results will feel like magic—your life will be transformed.”

Her first set of handprints revealed a highly confusing pattern of crisscrossing lines traversing her entire palm, like wild weeds choking a garden. This told me she was mentally exhausted, worrying about the demands of daily living and her desire to find a partner. The over-abundance of lines reflected Elizabeth’s chronically agitated state of mind.

I explained to her that the hectic network of lines was short-circuiting her ability to perceive herself and the world clearly. I told her that happiness in a relationship would continue to elude her until she regained her self-control and became centered within herself.

“You can’t change the past,” I continued, “but you can change your present and your future and attract positive people into your life by changing your expectations of relationships.”

“But how do I do that?” she asked.

“By changing one line at a time,” I said. “We need to clean up your hand and get rid of some of these excess lines. You need to balance the three major lines of heart, head and life with the minor lines of destiny, Sun and Mercury in order to establish a better equilibrium in your life.”

I explained that the lines of our hands change when we change our attitude and outlook on life, which is why palmistry is such an excellent tool for self-development. It allows us to focus on the areas of our life most in need of work, and as we strive to improve those aspects of our lives, it lets us monitor our progress by tracking the changing lines of our palm.

“It won’t happen overnight,” I told her. “Your habits, self-doubts and negative mindset have developed over many years, and it will take time to undo them. But as the great Himalayan yogi Lahiri Mahasaya said, `Banat, Banat, Ban Jai’—meaning doing, doing, one day done.”

In Elizabeth’s case, what she needed to “do” first was calm her mind and connect with her inner serenity. We began with a series of breathing exercises and a daily meditation routine.

We met once a month to discuss the positive changes in her life and take fresh handprints to check the changes in her lines. She was encouraged when she saw her major lines become more apparent.

As she felt better about herself, she was no longer driven by the need to jump from one relationship to another, looking for love. She felt a great release from the past patterns of behaviour that had held her captive for so long.

In her “after” handprints, we can see the busy network of interference lines subsiding, reflecting her more peaceful, confident, and focused approach to life.

Elizabeth experienced a major life transformation with the help of Vedic palmistry, and she did it by changing one line at a time.

A well-formed and well-spaced head and heart line will produce a lovely quadrangle in the middle of our hand, which is universally considered to be one of the most mystically charged and auspicious formations in palmistry. That’s why the space between the head and heart line is poetically referred to as “The Landing Strip of The Angels”.

A healthy, balanced quadrangle, that is a quadrangle formed by a long, deep heart line (representing our emotions) and a long, deep head line (representing our mind), is a strong indication that we have heart-mind coherence. A balanced heart and head line tells us that a powerful and positive connection exists between our heart and mind . . . our passion, intuition and reason are operating in sync; we are emitting and open to receiving love and loving energy. The magnetism of a healthy, balanced quadrangle will attract divine blessings into our lives, which often show up in the form of visionary dreams, dear friends, inspired teachers and soul mates. It truly is “The Landing Strip of the Angels”!

When the head line is longer than the heart line, our rational mind is overpowering our heart, which shuts down our heart center and creates disharmony in our life. To remedy the problem, we have to grow our heart line by being more loving and compassionate.

When the head line is shorter in relation to the heart line, our emotions overpower our rational mind, which can cause our emotions to run amok. We need to improve our head line by becoming more objective and trying to see the bigger picture.

Change your Lines, Transform your Life

The lines of the hand change over time in direct response to our awareness and effort. The short heart line or short head line can grow depending on whichever is creating the imbalance in the quadrangle. Yoga exercises, including breathing techniques and meditation, help accelerate the transformation process.

Palmistry is a science of transformation through which we can mend broken lines and make them stronger and more vibrant. All it takes is learning the basics and making a few minor adjustments in our attitude, outlook and lifestyle.

Years of experience have shown us that it takes a minimum of 90 days of consistent effort to improve the lines in the hand and make permanent, positive changes in our thought patterns. This is why our four online Challenges are twelve weeks or 90 days long: The Heart Line Challenge, The Head Line Challenge, The Life Line Challenge and The Mounts Challenge. Each Challenge focuses on a specific area of our life: the way we love, the way we think, the way we live and the way we relate to the world.

Don’t worry if you’ve never studied Vedic palmistry before, the Challenges are fun to read and easy to understand. And I will also be there for you in the video segments, supporting you along every step of this life-changing journey!

2022: What to Expect in The Year Ahead

By Ghanshyam Singh Birla, Vedic Palmist-Astrologer

To help you better navigate the year ahead, Ghanshyam has drawn up a chart for the New Year forecasting the trends we can expect in 2022.

For the past couple of years, our attention has been intensely focused on the 4th house representing “home” in all its manifestations—the comfort and security of our home, the happiness and warmth of family, changes to our dwelling place, including renovations, restructuring, buying and selling and the nurturing figure of our mother. On a global scale, the 4th house reflects the stability of our homeland, Mother Earth, the world and our familial connection with all of humanity. The year 2022 will shift our focus to the 5th house of love and creativity.

Like last year’s chart, the ascendant Virgo is at a powerful 15 degrees. However, while last year Mercury, the ruler of Virgo, was sitting in the 4th house debilitated in Sagittarius, this year, Mercury is sitting comfortably in the sign of its friend, Capricorn, in the 5th house. This awakens our creativity to express in any form that inspires us—creating children, books or art out of love and giving a sense of pleasure.

Additionally, the ruler of the sign Capricorn, Saturn, is sitting with Mercury in the 5th house. When the planetary ruler of a house is sitting in its own sign, in this case Saturn in Capricorn, it assures, or almost guarantees, our productivity and provides us with a depth of well-intentioned longing to rise and shine with joy, poise and prosperity of spirit. That positive planetary energy makes 2022 a great year for planning, creating, restructuring and, above all, for seeking higher wisdom. In fact, because of the influence of Saturn in its own sign, 2022 is a perfect time to develop spiritually through prayer, meditation and quiet self-reflection, all of which will promote a sense of wellness and feeling of peace, affection and love.

But will we have the strength and courage needed to turn a new page in 2022 and begin anew? The answer is a resounding yes! In the New Year’s chart, Mars, the warrior planet, is sitting in its own sign of Scorpio which, thanks to Mars’ placement in the 3rd house, will enable us to cultivate bravery, self-assurance and resolve. Additionally, Ketu is conjunct Mars in the 3rd house which, on one the hand, can help usher in long-awaited social reform. On the other hand, it requires the use of discernment and wisdom to determine the best course of action for us to take, both as individuals and as a society. Of course, not everyone agrees on what the best course of action is when it comes to such things as personal freedoms or climate change, so we must be careful to avoid misunderstandings as a result of miscommunication that could bring complications into our life.

Thankfully, Jupiter in Aquarius is sitting in the 6th house, which means God’s continuing grace will help us realize excellence in our physical, mental and emotional being. Jupiter in the 6th protects us from wandering into the wrong environment or associating with people who use negative, disruptive or violent means to get their way, be it invading the Ukraine or throwing a PTA meeting into chaos.

Nevertheless, we must be vigilant in maintaining inner poise at home because the Sun is in the 4th house, which as we know is the house of home. And while the Sun is happy to be in the 10th, house, where it can shine its light on the public events, it can be too hot and intense for the 4th house, relating to our home, roots, homeland or any place we consider a private sanctuary. So, it is extremely important to maintain our inner poise and persist to remain centered in the face of everyday changing circumstances, including our relation to Mother Earth and climatic uncertainty.

Another aspect of the 2022 chart we should be aware of is that it contains a challenging Kal Sarpa yoga, which means all the planets are on one side of the chart. This creates a polarity that can leave us feeling either imbalanced or very focused—the choice is ours. Many famous individuals who have changed the course of history had Kal Sarpa yogas in their birth charts. Consequently, it’s important for us not be thrown off balance. Indeed, the chart of 2022 suggests this is an ideal chance for us to make great strides in our evolutionary journey—to positively transform our lives no matter how much confusion, panic or upheaval is swirling around us.

How to Make the Most of 2022

But how do we remain calm and centered, especially when the world seems to be turning upside down? Well, a sure-fired method is starting each day with a morning meditation. This works even better when combined with a 15-minute recitation of the Lord Ganesh mantra (Om Ganesha Rinam Chhindhi Varenyam Hum Namaha Phat. Ganesh is, of course, the Vedic deity who removes obstacles blocking our path to success and happiness.

While meditating, remember to focus on the third eye, the point between the eyebrows known as the Christ consciousness center. The third eye connects us to our superconscious; it is here that our prayers are answered—where solutions to our problems appear to us. And it is where we cultivate peace and joy. Indeed, one of my favorite Bible passages—one that gives me a deep sense of assurance—is Revelations 3:20, in which Christ promises his followers they can reach him anytime by focusing on their third eye. “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”

Have a safe and blessed 2022!
